Sgt. John Thomas Petty Jr., 48, of Monroe died on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

A native of Fulton County, he was a devoted husband, beloved son, father, brother, and dedicated peace officer. He was a key member of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division and he supervised the Crime Scene Investigations Unit and was responsible for the security and processing of evidence in all criminal cases. Sgt. John Thomas Petty Jr., 48, of Monroe died on Saturday, October 8, 2011.

A native of Fulton County, he was a devoted husband, beloved son, father, brother, and dedicated peace officer. He was a key member of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division and he supervised the Crime Scene Investigations Unit and was responsible for the security and processing of evidence in all criminal cases. He had over 24 years of experience in law enforcement, devoting his entire career to the service of others. Other employment was with Monroe Police Department, Mercer University, Spalding County Sheriff's Office, Al Burruss Correctional Center and GA Diagnostic and Classification Prison. John had five different instructor certifications, which shows his dedication and willingness to teach police officers beginning their careers. John was a premier example to his fellow employees and will be missed.

Survivors include: his parents John Thomas Sr. and Barbara H. Petty of Zebulon; wife, Norma Yvonne M. Petty of Monroe; daughter, Amber Petty of Barnesville; brother, Jon Jason Petty of Holiday, FL; and sister, Michele Jackson of Griffin.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 in Smith Memory Chapel with Matt Guthas officiating. Interment will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
